Symptoms

How it can feel

Lower back pain can feel very different from person to person. You might notice:

A dull ache or stiffness across the lower back, especially in the morning or after sitting
Sharp or catching pain with certain movements like bending, lifting or twisting
Pain that spreads into the buttock, hip or down the leg
Muscle tightness or spasm on one or both sides
Difficulty standing up straight or moving after being still
Pain that flares with prolonged sitting, driving or desk work

Our Approach

How we assess it

Your first visit begins with a thorough history and physical examination. Dr Elvin assesses how your spine, hips and surrounding muscles move, checks for the source of your pain, and screens for anything that needs referral or imaging. You'll get a clear explanation of what's going on — in plain language, not jargon.

Common Causes

What can contribute to it

Understanding what's behind your pain helps us treat the cause, not just the symptom. Common contributors include:

Prolonged sitting, driving or desk work
Heavy, repeated or awkward lifting and bending
Poor movement habits and muscle imbalance
Sudden strains from sport, the garden or the workplace
Age-related changes in the spinal joints and discs
Weak core and gluteal muscles that under-support the spine

Lower Back Pain — FAQ

Can chiropractic help my lower back pain?

For many people, yes. Chiropractic care aims to restore movement to stiff or restricted joints and ease the muscle tension that often accompanies lower back pain. Most acute cases improve within a few visits, though results vary from person to person. Dr Elvin will assess whether chiropractic is suitable for you at your first appointment.

How many visits will I need?

Most acute lower back pain settles within a few visits over two to four weeks. Longstanding or recurring pain may take longer. We don't sell prepaid packages — you're never asked to commit beyond your next appointment.

Do I need a scan or X-ray first?

Not usually. Most lower back pain can be assessed clinically without imaging. If Dr Elvin finds something during your examination that warrants a scan, they'll refer you appropriately.

Should I rest or keep moving?

In most cases, gentle movement is better than bed rest. We'll give you specific advice based on your presentation, including any activity modifications to support your recovery.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed to see us privately. Some funding options such as a Medicare Chronic Condition Management plan or DVA do require a GP referral — see our funding options.
