Many everyday headaches are linked to the neck and the muscles around the head. At our Mount Hutton clinic, Dr Elvin focuses on tension-type and cervicogenic (neck-related) headaches — assessing whether your neck is contributing and using gentle, hands-on care that may help reduce how often they occur.

Symptoms

How it can feel

Tension-type and cervicogenic headaches often feel like:

A dull, pressing ache rather than a sharp or throbbing pain
Tightness like a band around the head, or pain starting at the base of the skull
Pain that spreads from the neck up into the head
Headaches that worsen with poor posture, stress or long hours at a screen
Associated neck stiffness and tight shoulder muscles

Our Approach

How we assess it

Not all headaches are the same, so a careful history and examination matters. Dr Elvin assesses your neck movement, posture and the muscles around your head and neck, and screens for headaches that need referral to your GP. If your headaches don't fit a neck-related pattern, we'll tell you and point you in the right direction.

Headaches — FAQ

Can a chiropractor help with headaches?

For tension-type and cervicogenic (neck-related) headaches, chiropractic care may help by improving movement in the neck and easing the muscle tension that contributes to them. Dr Elvin will assess whether your headaches are neck-related at your first visit and be honest if another type of care is more appropriate.

What about migraines?

Migraine is a distinct neurological condition and is best managed with your GP. Some people with migraine also have neck-related pain that chiropractic care may help with, but we focus on the neck component rather than treating migraine itself.

Do I need imaging or tests?

Most tension-type and cervicogenic headaches can be assessed clinically. If anything in your history or examination suggests you need further investigation, Dr Elvin will refer you to your GP.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on how long you've had the headaches and what's driving them. Dr Elvin will discuss a realistic plan with you — and we never ask you to commit beyond your next appointment.
