Scoliosis is a sideways curve of the spine. Many people live well with it, but it can sometimes be associated with stiffness, muscle imbalance or discomfort. At our Mount Hutton clinic, Dr Elvin offers assessment and conservative management focused on movement, comfort and function — and refers on when specialist input is appropriate.

Symptoms

How it can feel

People with scoliosis may notice:

An uneven appearance — shoulders, waist or hips that look asymmetrical
Muscle tightness or fatigue on one side of the back
Stiffness or reduced movement in the spine
Aching or discomfort with prolonged sitting, standing or activity
In many cases, no pain at all — it may be noticed incidentally

Our Approach

How we assess it

Dr Elvin takes a history, examines your posture and spinal movement, and looks at how any curve is affecting your comfort and function. Chiropractic care does not straighten or 'correct' a scoliotic curve — the focus is on assessment, monitoring and helping you move and feel better. If your presentation warrants specialist review or imaging, you'll be referred.

Most cases are idiopathic (no single known cause)
Often first noticed during adolescent growth
Sometimes related to differences in the spine or posture
Muscle imbalance that can accompany a curve
In adults, age-related (degenerative) changes

Scoliosis — FAQ

Can chiropractic correct scoliosis?

No. Chiropractic care does not straighten or correct a scoliotic curve. Our role is assessment, monitoring, and helping to manage any related stiffness, muscle imbalance or discomfort so you can move and feel better. Significant or progressing curves are managed with your GP and specialist.

Is scoliosis always painful?

No — many people with scoliosis have little or no pain. When discomfort does occur, it's often related to muscle imbalance or stiffness, which conservative care may help.

Should I see a specialist?

Some cases, particularly in growing children and adolescents or where a curve is progressing, need specialist assessment. Dr Elvin will advise if a referral is appropriate for your situation.
